Three piece backs

Post by TomBicknell » Thu Sep 04, 2025 5:16 pm

I stopped in at Timberzoo in Geelong today for a stickybeak, and because I have no self control I came away with a few bits of northern silky oak.

It’s beautiful stuff, and I picked out a few well quartersawn pieces. Initially I was thinking of necks, because they’re 140x32mm, but as I was driving home it occurred to me I could try a three piece back. Something to mull over while I stare admiringly at it, anyway.

In my understanding that plank you showed the end of is not quarter sawn , its very much the perpendicular, Crown Sawn.

It will be lovely and stable for necks if you laminate it to make it look pretty. If you cut it to 3mm thickness it will bend like a snake and you'll have a hell of a hard time making it sound musical.

That said it does look very pretty.

Ah, that’s the tricksy medullary rays that you see on the horizontal. They’re always perpendicular to the grain, which you can see less prominently going vertically.
