What wood is this?

Post by Bob Connor » Sat Oct 08, 2011 11:13 pm

Just returned from a holiday in Bali and the photos below are of the table in our villa.

I reckon you'd get a few guitars from it but can you guess what wood it is?

The wood itself is not from Bali but came from another part of Indonesia.

Tub of wombat lard for the winner.

I was over on Magnetic Island visiting my son recently and saw some bars tops out in the new beer garden area being made at the local pub. The wood was fallen tree's from recent Cyclone Yasi and it was Queensland Walnut. The table in the picture looks very similar in colour and grain pattern to what I seen last week so my guess is Indonesian Walnut.

I think the grain on the right of the top thats on the quarter cut looks like a Mahogany or Cedar exept that it's a bit brown rather than red ,but that could be because of the mud like stain that that is seen on Indo furniture, so I'll say a

Toona Cilata [ called also Toon, Suren or Indian Mahogany ]

Its the wrong colour but the grain line and fineness looks a bit like camphor laurel....no defined black streaking either but then I am not sure that is apparent in all the species.

Nope.

It's a very predominant rain-forest tree throught Asia.

You'll probably find it at Bunnings as well.

The locals call it Mahogany but it's actually Meranti, Black Meranti, in fact, from Java.

There's heaps of this in woodworking shops along Sunset Road which runs from Kuta up to Seminyak. The woodworkers there use sit by the side of the road flattening them with little electric planers.

No wood is cut in Bali any more. I think all the useful stuff has been cut or is now protected so they bring it in from Java and Sulawesi.

Dude I want my wombat lard, seeing as "Meranti" is Shorea spp. then I believe I am close enough for the lard. I hope we can avoid a lengthy legal battle on this one Bob.

Yours sincerely

Bob, what we all want to know is did you successfully "souvenir" the table?
