Rosette Sticks

Post by J.F. Custom » Wed Sep 14, 2011 11:28 pm

Hi all.

Just curious if anyone knows of a supplier for rosette sticks - other than LMI ?

Or does anyone make their own and if so, how do you go about keeping the pieces accurate in dimension?

I have tried cutting my own before in various ways, but have never been perfectly happy with results; at least, for the effort involved.

Cheers,

Jeremy.

Jeremy, in the Courtnal book on classicals there is a simple jig for sizing purfling. Basically a wooden block with a blade that is depth adjustable and you pull the strips through and the blade acts like a scaper to size your strips. I've never used one so can't vouch for how well they work.
But if you thicknessed your blank carefully or start with well dimensioned veneers, couldn't you cut accurate strips using a fret saw blade in the table saw with some jig that sets the width accurately. I can see it in my head and I think there used to be a jig post by someone who was cutting veneer using something similar. I think the trick is to slide the veneer up against a stop that gives you the required width dimension and then use zero clearance plates on the bottom and the top of the veneer to hold and support the thin wood on both sides through the cut. If it well set up you should be able to get very accurate square results with no need for further clean up.

Hope this helps
Cheers
Dom
