New member intro

Post by Gazm » Sun Sep 04, 2011 1:27 pm

G'day Ladies & Gents,

My folks chose my handle, Gary Martin, but i prefer GAZ.
At present I'm setting up the cave in my backyard shed here in Brisvegas, but struggling with controlling humidity levels.
Recently I purchased a number of uku sets from a gent at Dorrigo,Thanks Steve, & the rosewood set, grain end split x 100mm. I suspect the land elevation at Dorrigo to my near sea level location my have been the problem?, hence now setting up hot box with incandescent lamps & small circulating fan until fit out room is achieved.
Of coarse, I , like many others have been '' LURKING'' for some months & very much enjoying the banter between most of you rogues  So come on you LURKS, jump on board,
Oh... & hello Mr Kiwigeo, would you mind if i purchased at least one of Mr Spittle's uku sets today as it is father's day & i promised my eldest girl a nice tenor build
No doubt i will have many questions on my splinter journey & if you could offer any shed insulation advice, would be kindly accepted :)

Gidday Gaz and welcome to the forum.

In answer to your question..no I don't mind if you purchase one of Tims uke sets. I'm probably one of the more active tonewood buyers on the forum but Im not quite as bad some make out.

Cheers Martin

Hi Gaz, Welcome, That RH can be a problem for us new to this Looofery, I have to bring my wood inside and live with it,as we have air con and that keeps the RH down around 50%, but I find that good, getting to know the wood :D

cheers Tod

I have to fight to get the RH up.
Luckily there's a swampy attached to the workshop that I run regularly.

Welcome to the madness Gaz.

Yeah, it can be. It can be very relaxing. Like the first time you get your plane really sharp and set just right and the curlies start jumping off the wood. It's magic.

Then you get those moments when you have gotten three of the four pieces of binding in and you've just broken three pieces trying to get that last one done and you're down to one last piece of matching binding. Yeah, not so magical then.

Welcome Gazza
Yes also welcome to the madness that is luthiery. Making guitars is a lot like playing golf, so many different 'little' nuances to it which can make it frustrating as all hell at times when things don't go well, but whenit does, the satisfaction is fantastic & you just want to do it all again. It does have a couple of nasty addictions that tag along for the ride too! :)

Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.
