Good Morning Vietnam

Post by Bob Connor » Wed Dec 03, 2008 8:31 pm

Well folks I've been in sunny Hanoi since Monday on a work trip.

I teach at the Gordon TAFE in Geelong and we've been negotiating a project with a college in Hanoi for the past three years so that they will deliver a Diploma of Computer Systems Engineering and their students will get an Australian qualification from the Gordon.

My job is to liase with the staff in respect to curriculum and assessments and to ensure the standard of the course meets Australian education requirements.

The pace of the city is simply frenetic. (but I've been told Ho Chi Minh City is much worse) I've been to quite a few Asian countries but never seen anything like this before.

Crossing the road is an art. You simply walk out into the traffic and let the 125cc chicken chasers go around you. A bit unnerving at first but you get used to it. Beer here is also 20 cents a glass.

This morning we did some filming at VTV2 which is the national science/educational channel. They're producing a 45 minute doco on the project so at some stage I'll do a youtube post of the program so you can have a laugh at yours truely dubbed into Vietnamese.

Heres a pic

I've been fairly busy on this trip but one of my priorities is to track down some Dalbergia bariensis and Mun Ebony.

Wow Bob you clean up well my friend....... :D

I can't think of a better Aussie ambassador than you and I am sure that your hosts will enjoy the hell out of you.

Please keep us posted and you had better hope that when the YouTube is available and dubbed that they don't have you saying anything about something being to bookoo........

Everything is fine here and we were just discussing castrating lambs so no worries...... :D

Hey, have fun while you're there, Ambassador!

While you're there you should definitely sample the true cuisine of Vietnam, and try some Lemongrass Dog. I have heard it tastes like dingo.

I'm sitting in KL airport waiting for the flight back to Melbourne after a productive week of work.

No Dogs were consumed Dennis but the local cuisine was sensational, particularly the Cha Ca, a local fish recipe. The best was at Cha Ca la Vong which has been serving this local delicacy since 1871. They only serve the one dish so it's great for the indecisive.

The Hanoi Beer is nice too.

We had the weeknd off so went to have a look a Ha Long Bay which is about 130km east of Hanoi.

It's a beautiful place full of limestome formations and caves, plus villages of fisherfolk living on the water.

Those homes look like my workshop in the middle of a wet season downpour. Some nice perks with your job Bob.

Viet Nam is a beautiful country. I got a good look in '67 - '68, flying right seat, on DF aircraft. I never got a look above the DMZ though. The coastal area is outstanding. Perfect for resort facilities with private beaches.

Thanks for the pictures, Bob!
