Good Neighbor!

Post by hilo_kawika » Fri Oct 31, 2008 3:47 pm

Well, my next door neighbor is a very nice fellow and a liquor distributor besides. Apparently these two things are not mutually exclusive!

In any case, knowing that I'm off to Oz in a few months, he gave me a six-pak of "Toohey's New Imported Australian Beer". I'm not sure that a mere 6 bottles is enough to form an opinion but we'll see.

Given that this audience has been known to knock down the odd brew, I'm interested in what opinions you might have regarding this brand, if any.

aloha,

Dave Hurd

Nothing wrong with New.

My favorite drop when I'm in Sydney.

As long as the brew is cold, you won't find many Australians saying no to a beer. Heck, I've been out fishing long after all the ice is gone, and even skulled back a few that were darn near boiling.

Toohey's New was all we drank when we lived in NSW. Now it's pretty well only XXXX.

Yes the New is the brew to do in NSW but my regular is Coopers Sparkling Ale, which reminds me, I have something to do which is very important on a Frydee Arvo. :gui

Im with Kim, Coopers Red is the superior beer here in Australia. It has a yeasty bottom and does not cause hangovers to boot! There are also a lot of boutique brewers get your WA mates to take you to the Sail and Anchor in Freemantle and try the chilli beer. mmmmm..... in and out.....

No Hesh, Aussies dont drink scotch, we drink Whiskey or Bourbon instead, and only when its liquid. Im a CC man myself, on ice...

Come to think of it Aussies will drink most things.

'Come to think of it Aussies will drink most things' - Yep, handy that the local sugar mill is making ethanol... can get it in a 20L drum.

Ah yes, the Sail and Anchor, many times has a pint or 2 many of brass monkey, dogbolter, milk stout or Fremantle larger passed from my wallet to the silver trough as I paddled down stream in the glass canoe :D

Another top Freo micro brewery is Little Creatures down in the fisherman harbour, they make a pale ale which won an international award for best exhibit by a MB, it should be available in your better bottle shops national so you can try it for yourself. It is just lovely and aromatic from the stubby but tasted freshly drawn from the tap and you will understand immediately why it won such a prestigious award.

Cheers

Actually, i prefer the food at Little Creatures although the outdoor area is a bit squished, and I agree about the Pale Ale Kim! The hop used (Pacific Wonder from memory) has the most wonderful liquorice and fruit and raisin notes, oh joy! Over here they are charging $59.99 for a slab  The reality is that you need two days in Freo, one at each  Have a couple for me....

I tried the Little Creatures beer...tasted like someone had left a glass of xxxx beer lying around and a dog had dunked his balls into the glass.

Not my cup of tea at all.

Can't say I have tried dogball dunked XXXX Martin. Tell me, what breed was he, Dingo? That would make the most sense because I believe Southwark use canine genitalia in the form of a dead dingoes donger to achieve their unique flavour and I would imagine that one would need to conserve such a valuable resource by using all available components.

Ah Adelaide, the city of contradictions, the city of churches and the city of bikey chapters, the city of Coopers and the city of Southwark....but, take a ride on a big twin through the Adelaide hills, and you know full well where God spends his rec leave. 8)

Cheers

Southwark definitely has feline origins. :D

So it's true! Aussies (or transplanted Kiwis) really are quite reserved and hesitate to express their true feelings...

I guess its a bit naive to ask how you got to know the actual (vs alleged) taste of dogs balls Martin? No its not tea.

The hop used is Pacific northern, apols for the inaccuracy.

Kim,

1. Churches....yes plenty of them but I dont spend much time in such places. Building guitars is my religion.
2. Weve got rid of the bikies. Mike Wran's draconian new laws have made the bikies piss off over the border to Victoria. Hope they stay there.
3. Coopers....hate the stuff but my (kiwi) Dad loves the stuff. Southwark...absolute swill. I generally drink Stella or Coronoas.
4. Adelaide Hills......live there and love it.

Cheers Martin

I drove through Adelaide once. You don't want to blink, you'll miss the whole thing.

I was surprised at how small the place was, smaller than Wollongong! I was expecting something the size of Sydney or Melbourne. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anything bad about Adelaide, I thought it was a nice place, just like a city except much smaller.

Oh, and to prove what a tosser I must be: I liked the Southwark!

Ive had a great time every visit to Adelaide. Coopers Stout on tap.....mmmmm, the Adelaide Oval is the prettiest cricket ground in Aus (who can forget Greatbatch's double ton, or Allan Border's, or, or...). The Hills are beautiful as well.

Sterling as an absolute beauty of a spot, and it's not far to find a few winery's to get you pissed on free grog. What's not to love.

And Adelaide is a city without being a city. The way they all should be.
