Hi,
Im wondering how people are finding the ubeaut hard shellac.
I know there was problems with the first lot but how do yous find the new stuff?
How is the finish holding up to scratches etc compared to Nitro.
Ubeaut hard shellac
Re: Ubeaut hard shellac
I've applied it by hand to 2 instruments about 4-5 months ago.
Not a real test of time but the best I can offer.
One is played daily but in a home setting & is still excellent.
The other is, I believe, traipsing around the NT being trialled for some concerts coming up.
I can let you know how it's fairing when I see it again in a few weeks.

MBP,
I think you might have some more luck either posting in, or searching on international forums.
I know there were a few on here who got burned by the Hard Shellac number 1 and as a result, have been disinclined to reinvestigate with number 2. However their are current users in the US at least, that may have some comments to pass on to you.
Jeremy.

Re: Ubeaut hard shellac
Ive got one bottle of Hard shellac and have not been using the stuff long enough to know if this product crazes, but if it does it is the only shellac I have ever seen that does by itself craze.
I believe any crazing is because of the polishing technique, contamination between the layers
Years ago I spent months trying to craze shellac and the only way I got it to happen was with linseed oil between coats, same as you can do it with paint and glue in between or a size mix
I dont believe if you build up layers to fast crazing happens, it wont be a fine finish , it will be lumpy or not fine.
I do it all the time, put as much as can possibly be put on a job in one go , and then come back every five minutes to give another brush coat, it can only be done three of four times or you just start pulling off previous layers. We go through Heaps of orange flakeand button and blonde, wheel barrow loads every six months , plus years of experimenting trying to get all types of textured finishes to match antique finishes .and as far as I know it's just natural shellac, never heard of plastisizers being added, but I know little about how its made
By crazing these guys on that link are talking about a nice smooth finish, and in the reflection you will just see fine cracks all over joining up to each other ? Thats Oil , or contamination of something else , or ubeat is the ony strange mix to do it

Re: Ubeaut hard shellac
I've used it (old formula), and it was crap.
I sprayed the stuff on (thin coats) and it crazed like buggery. Even on the side of the headstock - that hasn't got any thing to with vibration of flexing.
