What doesn't epoxy stick to ?

Post by curly » Sat Oct 03, 2015 1:39 am

I'm wondering what people coat their molds / forms/ cauls in when laminating so that the glue doesn't stick . Primarily I'm using epoxy but while I'm being messy it could just as well be polyurethane ( this particular job is a canoe keel , though it'd apply equally for laminate sides ).
I'm thinking perhaps a paint on Teflon , or some sort of release agent ? Previously I've just taped light plastic painters drop sheet to the form but that just adds to the general messiness !
Any thoughts much appreciated .
Thanks .
Pete

When I built my cedar strip canoe and it came time to laminate up the keel, I coated the form with melted paraffin.

I use wax paper. And I use vinegar for clean-up before the resin has hardened.

Thanks for those prompts . I'm sort of hoping for something like a paint or permanent release agent that I can apply and then the jobs done . Maybe wishful thinking ...

Might pay to drop into AJ fibreglass and buy a release agent.

Remember when fibreglassing they use epoxy all the time, so they'd have it down pat and be able to talk you through it.

I also use paste wax. A little goes a long way. I refresh my molds every other time I use them.

Just be cautious if you go down the marketed release agent path - they can contain silicons, which given the nature of your project/s, could cause cross contamination nightmares down the track. Check with the distributor or manufacturer or else, stick with your paste waxes as mentioned previously.

+1

A while back I had a non slip mat in my shop that had silicone release agent residue on it. I ended up replacing a back on a classical Id had sitting on the mat while French Polishing.

It looks like wax is the go . It has its own risks though . Liquid epoxy is a shit for running out of the stack , it wouldn't take much surface area missed to have an unretrievable component butchered to save the form . I will look into what's used in fibreglass molds , it would definitely be the closest trade to what I'm attempting .
Thanks

I've found epoxy won't stick to clear packaging tape. Simply apply it to your mold or cauls, you could wax over it if concerned but I've never had a problem with the amount of epoxy that will bleed through the outer veneers of a laminated side or back.

Uncle Google suggests pva as the release agent over wax . One suggestion was hairspray over wax . All else fails I'd have a mean quiff !
