Re: Sugar Gum - have access to one being taken down; any tips/advice?
From the size of the tree that's one hell of a lot of rosettes! -R :) :) Yup. And based on the width of the trunk I estimate I'll be able to make 2-foot diameter rosettes  :) :) :) Big thanks also to blackalex1952 and Fisherman for the tips as to how to handle obtaining and using the wood - ...

Re: Sugar Gum - have access to one being taken down; any tips/advice?
Furniture crossed my mind, however I've never seriously considered making furniture in the past, so don't know much about it, plus I think I'm going to have a hard enough time convincing the parents to let me have pieces big enough to make guitar bodies out of, let alone furniture as space to dry ou...

Re: Sugar Gum - have access to one being taken down; any tips/advice?
Sounds like a big tree, should get many weeks worth of firewood out of it! :) :) - that's the tragedy of it; this is a tree I've really admired ever since I was a little tacker and have grown up with (it's at my parent's family property where I grew up from being a little kid), and I'm trying to sa...

Re: Sugar Gum - have access to one being taken down; any tips/advice?
Thanks! Some good spec's on Sugar Gum in there - will compare it with some of the more commonly used Australian tonewoods and try to figure out from that how to make something worthwhile out of it.
Cheers!

Sugar Gum - have access to one being taken down; any tips/advice?
Hi all, 'been a while since I've been here (got distracted with the electric guitar side of things). As per the thread title, I've got access to a large Sugar Gum (Eucalyptus Cladocalyx) that's to be taken down on Thursday (14th December). It's a beauty; probably 30-35 metres tall and straight as a ...

Hi Stu, I see you're already on the SFD forums -> excellent move. They're a good mob. A word of advice though; just make sure you use the search function on that forum to try and find an answer to whatever question is on your mind before posting a new thread about it; the SFD regulars are pretty goo...

Hi John/woodrat, good to see a luthier (i.e. not a large-scale commercial operation) pitching at the basic/low-end side of the market; it seems most luthiers just can't help themselves by seeing how pretty they can make their product/how much they can tart it up with exotic woods and fancy details a...

Re: Member Introduction and Current Build
Hi Sean, 'shame about losing the original top; 'really liked how the grain swooped in and down the centreline of the face with "wings" on either sides of the lower bout. Still - looks like you managed to score exactly that with the weissenborn (both faces taken from the same plank of wood there?). T...

Re: Falcate Bracing - Glues/Resin clarification
FGI make (or distribute not sure) resin as well. I cant remember exactly what it is called but I have found it to be better than Wests. Interesting..... I've used an epoxy (R180 with the H180 hardener) from the "ES 180 System" that I bought from FGI..... .... and it failed (delaminated) after only ...

Hmm. Still no sign of Lillian. You've all got me a bit worried now. Maybe she's back east helping the relo's repair. Am hoping work or visiting the relo's hadn't taken her back there at the time Irene had her little East Coast mosh session, and if she was, that she'd buckled in and came through it s...

Curses, stuffed up posting the link and then the "edit" function timed out before I could rectify the post. 'Not to worry Nick; Lillian "went west" years ago. Ah so she's a pioneer now & wears a ten gallon hat! Thanks Kerplunk, I know she'd be the first to think of us. :D Im still worried about her until she checks in. Nick, if we don't hear from her by Friday we're off to the US to find the girl. :) Oh ...

'Like the pickguard in the "Sheoak front.jpg" pic - is it also WA Sheoak or something else? The Blue Gum also looks a little intriguing. But more importantly, how would you rate their sound? Looks like you all built off the same plan - and maybe with the same top wood too; if so, this group of build...

Re: Anybody else noticed?
USPS would have come back with a suggested up-charge in international freight rates. The feds would have looked at the proposal and said to themselves...none of the negatively affected people can vote in the USA and smiled broadly as they gave it the tick telling them to charge what ever they like....

That's my problem Nick, finding a light source that is bright enough that won't get hot. I tried a cluster of LEDs but not bright enough... This big guitar is made entirely from Mitre 10 Tassie oak (back and sides) and WRCedar (top and bracing) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3250/3049308391_2a01bd3350_z.jpg Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout!! Ooooh, nasty!
Have heard there's only one tool can repair those dodgy Dalek builds - a Sonic Screwdriver!!
Oddly though, LMI & Stew-Mac don't seem to stock them....

Beginner/Bunnings woods
Hi all, am getting together the makings for my first attempt at a build (collecting timbers etc). They can play guitar better than the Darleks Martin. 'Bumped into a Dalek luthier the other day. Tried to have a chat, but as soon as I mentioned anything even remotely luthiery-related it became a bit of a one sided conversation; I couldn't get a word in through his constant screaming of "Intonaaa...

No explaining required....the boss has been harping on at me to put in a shed for the tonnes of wood we get through each winter. It'll also allow me to get some of the larger garden machinery out of the garage........and replace it with large woodworking machinery. Sheer brilliance!!!! :c...

Re: A visit with the Woodrat
Nick, do what Martin just did. Go buy a bunch of clamps and get them to toss a shed in for your troubles. 'Wish I could have been there to see him try to explain that one to the 'missus!! On the other hand, he seems to have survived the ordeal, so he obviously knows something the rest of us could w...
