Re: My multi use repair vice...

Hi again, it looks like I have a shop full of doorstops, Martin. Hahaha. Five door stops in all. However, not one of them has succumbed to holding doors open, yet. They have joined me in creating many and varied stringed instruments and Jewellery boxes, over a 60-year period. I did not realise they ...

My multi use repair vice...

Hi, this is one of the most useful time-saving tools I have purchased in a long time, and it was around $50. When gluing or applying lacquer to an instrument under repair, I always like to have it at the best angle to aid glue flow, clamping, and for the best light positioning. This clamp does it al...

Tone wood ???

Hi, here are a couple of older builds, Resonator guitars. One is made entirely of 3mm plywood, possibly from Bunnings, with a NGR neck. I was very surprised at the quality of the sound. I built it for myself as an experiment, but when I was made an offer I could not refuse, I had to let it go. 07-19...

I tried a couple of times to post, but had no luck. And I have to use a password every time I visit to get in. Gonna have to change that password as the one you gave me is tooooo long.

Hi, thanks for your efforts, guys, and there's me blaming Telstra. While I'm in, I'd better post something.

Doesn't time fly...

Hi, I was having a clean-up of the workshops the other week and was a bit surprised when I came across instruments that I had started but never got back to finish for whatever reason. I build whenever there is a gap in the flow of repairs, so a build could be shelved for a few months during a busy r...

I can't imagine not having a workshop, hmmm, but one day.....

Hi Mark, I have looked into it in the past, but could only find info on the guitars that he played. They were built by Col Joyes' brother, Keith, in the period 1959 to the early 1960s

The one I have is possibly Japanese.

Col Joye RIP.

Just a short story. At the start of this week, I rearranged my office/showroom by putting guitars that are not normally displayed on display. All were a mix of abandoned guitars, refurbished and ready for sale. There was one guitar that I do not display for sale, because I play it often due to its g...

Re: NGR/Cedar build

Hi Alan, I only used the laminated side option due to making a blooper on one of the sets of sides, so, as not to waste them, I used one set as a lamination. I would sooner stiffen the sides using both a “boxed” Kerfed binding, as shown here, and heavier side reinforcement. The kerfing shown adds a ...

Very nice. I’ve got some really nicely figured NGR I’m itching to build with.

Did you laminate the sides with another layer of NGR, or something else?

Hi Tom, I missed this post earlier. I laminated two layers of NGR. I'm not sure if I used the "quote" feature properly.

Re: Forum Governance Update: ANZLF Now Supported by Incorporated Association

Hi, yep, I agree, this forum runs great the way it is, thanks to the guys that keep things flowing. I visit another forum regularly, and I questioned why the number of posts had dropped to bugger all. The answer was that many choose to use the Facebook version. So the Forum side of sharing is slowly...

Re: Brace yourself another repair...

Hi, Mark, I appreciate your interest. The wood "sticks" are props used to support the brace whilst the glue is drying. I have a whole box of them, and the dots are my way of quickly identifying the different lengths. A throwback to my early days...well, if it still works. After the brace job, resett...

NGR/Cedar build

This guitar was finished late last year. It is made using New Guinea rosewood back and sides and neck, with a Cedar top. The inlays are mother-of-pearl and ebony. It’s a “000’ size guitar with gold frets and gold tuners. On this guitar, the sides were laminated as an experiment, which possibly accou...

Hi, I use or have used all of the above, and most times, a combination of tools are used. The only knife I have used is the one in the photo. It would be what I use the most along with the japenese rasps.

Re: Feathered braces v tucked braces

Hi, I agree that braces that are not checked into the linings could contribute to a more responsive top or back; however, the chance of a failed top or back, I think, is more likely. As a repairer for many years, I have repaired more guitars with braces that end at the kerfing and have not been chec...

Hi Tom, thanks for your input, much appreciated. I have three albums holding the prints of instruments I have built over the years. We're using the word "shed"......a term that conjures up images of cobwebs, dust and piles of stuff you should have thrown away years ago. Workshop is a better term.... Brace yourself another repair...

Hi, this is not a tutorial really, I just thought I would share another recent repair. All the braces in this guitar had become unglued from the back and top plates. Some In sections along their length and many others for the whole length of the brace, only being held in place because they were chec...

Hi, I was going through dozens of old plans that I had stored away and came across these old photocopies. How things have changed. I used to photocopy my tops, soundhole rosettes, and other parts, and store them away for future reference. Now there is the digital camera. Technology is a good thing. ...
